Happy Halloween!

  • Oct. 31st, 2009 at 3:24 PM

Happy Halloween, All! I spent some time yesterday and today working on some more horror movie card jewelry pieces for Now Showing Studio while watching scary movies. I am going to list a few more today before I get on my Steampunky Brewster costume and head out for Halloween fun. I just wanted to share this new bracelet first. Seriously, what girl doesn't need a Seed of Chucky charm bracelet? hehe. Have fun and be safe everyone!

stepping back in time

Above, a Timepiece charm in Acid Metal finish out of the kiln this morning. This is for an order, and I was really impressed with the way it turned out, so I snapped a pic of it. It is fun to start to get orders for these Steam Stones, mostly because now is the time that people start ordering them in the various finishes, and I get to see them for the first time, along with them. I love that my customers are able to envision how these might look in the finishes I have available, and are willing to take a chance and order them sight unseen.

So yesterday I referenced an adventure that we encountered on Saturday, and I will tell you about it today.

Steam Weekend: resting and draining

  • Feb. 17th, 2008 at 1:03 PM

Steam Weekend: day two. I would like to rest a little today a little. I do have to work some, but I want to spend some time making a delicious dinner, leisurely carving a new tile for tomorrow, and finishing watching Mirror Mask, which I started last night but got too tired to watch, even though it was great. I had watched a super 3 hour marathon of Lost before that, so I was a little TV-ed out. But I have work to do first, some glazing for sure, and the fearsome monster of my Michigan sales tax form is looming over me. I must do it today. I will try to keep this post brief.

Above, some mixed results of new glazes. All the brown ones are new bronzes I tested. Very disappointing, they look like lustery honey amber at best. Not bad, quite nice actually, but not bronze. The pewter did better, they are quite nice, one more shiny and the other matte. Next to test these on some actual beads to see how they really react. I think I mentioned, these are low fire glazes that I am pushing to high fire, so the metallic effect is being lost. I think I will try them at lowfire and see what happens too. I really do want some bronze. I have new red tests that I will be doing today too. I have a great red but I want a blood maroon glaze. I think that would be great with the natural brass I have been using lately.

Steam Week: awakening

  • Feb. 14th, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Welcome to day four of Steam Week. I did the carving above last night, I was pretty tired and it is still slightly rough. It is a keyhole, I think a rather masculine one. While I half slept I decided I wanted two keyholes, a feminine and a masculine, and then a carving of a key that combines elements of both. Below, some rough sketches I did of the new designs. I altered them on Photoshop for no real reason, I guess it's weird for me to show such early sketches. These are just rough ideas, and I don't detail the drawings like a draftman, as I like to see how the clay responds, so these are just basic layouts.

It's ALIVE!

'Did I request thee, Maker from my clay
To mould Me man? Did I solicit thee
From darkness to promote me?'
John Milton's Paradise Lost.

I found the above quote from Paradise Lost on the Frankenstein Wikipedia page. It is related because it is in the epigraph to the Mary Shelley novel, apparently. Sort of linking the creation of Adam to the creation of Frankenstein's monster. I wish I knew more about Paradise Lost, or Frankenstein for that matter. You know, I think I miss that about school, reading and studying literature and philosophy. I mean at the time it was stressful, all the classes and the deadlines. But now I can't find the time for any of it on my own.

A cinematic vision, ensued

I rarely share pictures of beads in process, simply because I have never been able to get a decent photograph of dry bone white bisque ware. The details usually wash out. But I think this picture came out ok, thanks to my new/old camera. The black velvet helps, it also sets a mood!

Sugar, Scary Things, and Beads!

  • Oct. 22nd, 2007 at 10:54 AM

I would like to announce that Rachel of Fancy Pants is the winner of the Scary Movie Moment bead giveaway! YAY! I am familiar with Rachel's wide range of work. She not only makes beautiful glass beads and jewelry, but she also works in sugar. The bats above are called Sugar Toppers, and they are made of fondant. You can buy them from her and use them to make your cakes and cupcakes extra fancy! Isn't that a great idea? I always wanted to be a pastry chef...I think fondant and icing and marzipan are very similar to porcelain. Check out her Flickr photos and her Etsy Shop! Rachel, contact me with your address and I will send you your bead goodies. And I will have to send some extra cupcake charms for you too!
