Sacrifice, Revisited

  • May. 2nd, 2008 at 10:19 AM

Another repost today this from 7/12/07, a little bit about art history, Dali and Gala, and Surrealism, and feminism and thoughts about gender. I have really enjoyed going back and reading these old posts, remembering what I was going through and seeing how cyclical my thoughts and actions can be. I have reconnected to this post today, thinking about what it means to be a modern woman, in all the different roles we play in our work, lives, marriages, and to society. And how sometimes it can be overwhelming to try to comprehend and balance it all.

Waves of Thought, Revisited

Today's post is a repost, from July 27, 2007. Last summer I was having a stressful time, work wise, and I was also dealing emotionally with an online group I had started which was dissolving or at least changing to another form outside of my control. I had just attended the NOW conference as a vendor, so Feminism was also on my mind. I was studying Dali at the time too, because somehow in my twisted head, studying the work and words of a madman helps me understand things more clearly *shrugs* Anyway, I am in a similar state today, so this repost seems appropriate.

So yesterday I was upset by a post on a feminist blog that I read called Feministing. I mean I am often upset by the posts there, but usually because they bring up real important issues for women that are troubling and disturbing, in terms of civil rights and violence and such. But yesterday I was upset because there was a post that was highly critical of a jeweler whose work I love, Margaux Lange. She is a silversmith who uses doll parts in her work, and apparently this pushes many buttons for people.

Halloween Heads and Headlessness

Oh My! Where did the morning go? I woke up late, at 10 am, when the dog simply insisted I was to sleep no longer, and it was time for me to get up and get her a cookie so she could go back to bed. grrr.

Anyway, I have been up reading my emails and blogs and was really disturbed by a post over on a feminist blog I read called Feministing about a jeweler that I love, Margaux Lange. She works with silver and Barbie doll heads and parts, and it obviously pushes buttons all over the place. I want to write about it but I think I need to gather my thoughts a bit. Maybe tomorrow. Now I am all paranoid that my beads are "dismembered" which is ridiculous to be honest. I know it's different, but still...

So quick post today with a picture of the newest Spookyheads. I am happy with about half of them. I don't like the color on the Tiki, I think it needs to be dark brown wood. So I will do him again. And the red and white skull face has potential, but there is too much going on. I love the 'stache and eyebrows but not with the red. I do like the Luche Libre look of him, but I want to do one that is more intentional and mask like. I don't like the alien, although I like his mouth and nose. Love the others...I am very happy with them. They will be on the website soon.

Have a great Halloween everyone!
