Beads 2009!

  • May. 6th, 2009 at 11:48 PM

With all the running around I have been doing, I almost forgot to post about my newest piece of press! I am in the special issue of Interweave's Beads 2009, out on bookshelves now! I have some beads in the editors' picks for Steampunk, and a full project as well! The piece above, Gears of Elegance, is in this issue, and it looks amazing. The photo is gorgeous (not the one above... that is the one I took) and I am very pleased with it. I created this necklace for myself for a very special event last fall... an elegant chocolate party which just happened to be on my birthday. I am very pleased that it made it in print, and it makes it extra special to have my personal memories intertwined with it, for all to see. It is always an honor to be apart of this special issue, and this year it is especially touching.

Steamy Spotlight: Green Girl Studios

  • Oct. 19th, 2008 at 11:09 AM

So I was tagged by the always amazing Andrew Thornton on his blog the other day, but honestly I am not feeling the meme love today. But it did prompt me to sit down and blog today, and I think that's one of the points of those memes, so here we are. It also reminded me that in my recent and sudden disappearance from blogland, that I never finished my thoughts on a series I was working on, which actually has to do with Andrew and his family. So go figure! Here is the completion of my thoughts from the Steamy Spotlight series:

The final supplier that I used as a resource for my article on Steampunk in beaded jewelry for Beadwork Magazine is one of my very favorite bead studio of artisans: Green Girl Studios. I met Cynthia of Green Girl many years ago, at one of my first bead shows out of state. I fell in love with her carving style and her handcrafted pewter beads, and I have been following her work ever since. We share a love of folklore and fairytale, and because of this, we share many of the same customers. I love to see designers use our works together, because they are great elements for telling stories through jewelry.

In recent years, I have met more of the Green Girl family, including Andrew, who is Cynthia's brother. He is an incredible wordsmith and artist and blogger, and a friend as well! Andrew helped me with some incredible and magical quotes for the Steampunk article, as he is well versed in fiction and storytelling and mythology. His quotes added some very thoughtful and poetic elements to the article, and I thank him for them. And his text was a perfect match when mixed with the examples of the Green Girl beads I used for the article, shown above. I chose the series of hearts above, which to me, have a steampunky quality, with the keyholes and rivets and aged look. Since i wrote the article, Green Girl has come out with even more steamy beads, like a skeleton key and a keyhole pendant, both of which I adore. Check out all the delightful pewter and silver and bronze goodies that they have to offer on their website

Steamy Spotlight on Vintaj

  • Sep. 4th, 2008 at 10:35 PM

So I was hoping to use the blog to just expand a little bit on some of my thoughts stemming from my Forging a Steampunk Fantasy article in Beadwork Magazine. In the Treasure Hunt part of the article, I discussed several different lines and styles of components that I think can be used to create steampunk styled jewelry. These are items that I think embody the spirit and history of steampunk, which can be incorporated into a steamy look. First up, the gorgeous line of Vintaj Brass. I have blogged about Vintaj a lot, because I just love working with it. Brass is a perfect metal for steampunk, and the Vintaj components have an aged brass finish merging with the old styled Victorian and Art Nouveau/Deco designs which immediately gives it an appearance and sense of history. I have always been an aged silver sort of person, but working with brass has really changed my whole way of working, and has inspired me in new ways. Something about brass makes it really warm and gives an immediate hand wrought feeling to jewelry, it is very magical. I am quite drawn to it and *whee!* I just placed another order today to create some new simple pieces for my fall jewelry line. I am very excited about it.

Steampunk Feature in Beadwork Magazine

  • Sep. 2nd, 2008 at 11:07 PM

So it has finally arrived in my mailbox, the big thing I have been excited about for months! The newest issue of Beadwork Magazine features an article and project I wrote about using Steampunk as a design style for beading! It was a really fun piece to write and I am very proud of it. My favorite part is the introduction, which is a description I dreamed up of a character in a steampunk world. That was a new style of writing for me, a tiny taste of fiction. Very different from my usual technical style of writing projects. The article itself highlights many different beads and findings that I think work well with a steampunk aesthetic for beaders. And the project uses a little of each of the types of beads that I mentioned in the article, something from each of the artists or companies. I will share some of my own pictures and more thoughts about those materials and the article in the next few blog posts.

Production Piles

I am feeling highly motivated today, or at least *right now* So I will keep the blog short and just show you a few things happening around the studio, these past few days. Above, some of my favorite Steam Stones so far, taken in an artsy picture with an old beautiful pottery book I have. Hard to let these guys go, but they have left me already, whisked away to their next place, to secret project land. Maybe we will see them again someday.

Seabirds and Submishuns

  • Mar. 15th, 2008 at 10:04 AM

Happy Saturday, all! I think I did not show you the above bracelet that is in the new Spring Stringing magazine. It has one of my links and a little Seabird charm, mixed with some pewter and crystals, and a great silver clasp. It's simple and springy and I am happy with it.

Huddled up in my little nest

  • Feb. 26th, 2008 at 2:55 PM

Hey just a quick post today. We got a bunch of snow last night (*sniffle* I thought Spring had Sprung) and all I want to do is curl up with my doggie but we need to go out for some groceries and I am not looking forward to it.

Above, a shot from the new Stringing Magazine. This piece was not created by me but features some of my beads, mixed with a pendant by Melissa of Chinook Jewlery. The designer, Michelle Mach, of Beading Daily did an excellent job of combining the two artists' ceramics in this piece, called "Nesting". I love the window effect! This piece is in a section called Custom Focals, which has 4 innovative projects that have focal pieces assembled from various art beads and findings. I love this idea!

White Snow, Black Hearts

  • Feb. 1st, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Yesterday I added some new Jet Black versions of some of my popular heart charms to the website, on the Memento Mori page. I did a little bit of touching up here and there to the site, getting ready for some upcoming press and highlighting some items for that. I have a lot of these little web updates to to, nothing major, just little nibblets here and there.

AEIOU, sometimes Y

  • Jan. 13th, 2008 at 7:37 PM

oops, I forgot to cross post here today, sorry!

Ok, today is supposed to be my day off, but I really need to write four articles to ship them tomorrow if it is humanly possible, so maybe I will end up taking a day next week off instead. Nevertheless, I can't make a big post today, because I need to write.

But I will share with you a deliciously *TERRIBLE* music video. This is prompted by Margot Potter's blog yesterday, where she showed a really bad Journey video, that made me laugh hard. But I do think there are worse ones though, and I will share with you what is probably my favorite. I remember it being in fairly heavy rotation in the 80's, I recall seeing it on MTV and thinking wha?!? It's even worse now about 20 years later. It's a band called Ebn-Ozn with "AEIOU, sometimes Y". Check out the lead singer's hair including the funky "tail!" Have a great Sunday, all!

Cookie Blues

  • Nov. 13th, 2007 at 11:18 AM

We are going through some serious sugar withdrawal here! With both of our birthdays last week, we had lots of yummy cake and brownies, and cookies, and candy, and marshmallows around. And now nothing. Which is really best for us, but when you go a few days on a sugar binge it's hard to come down...Pre birthday, I was doing well just keeping dark chocolate, dried fruit and candied ginger around for sweets, but I went through all of that already so I think it's time for a trip to Trader Joe's to restock. I had just better put the blinders on in the baked goods aisle!
